Vacation-home sales are booming again. The number of second-home sales in the United States increased by 30 percent last year. It was the largest gain since at least 2003, when the metric was first tracked.

The Miami real estate market recorded the most first-quarter residential sales in the 8 years the Elliman Report has been tracking the metric. Sales in Miami’s coastal communities rose 3.9 percent to 5,133, on a year-over-year basis.

Home prices in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties increased 16.5 percent in January, compared to January 2013. Home prices also increased on a month-to-month basis. The South Florida area was one of only 7 metropolitan areas to post price increases from December 2013 to January 2014. The month-to-month gain in Miami was .7 percent, the second largest increase in the country.

Existing condo and single-family home sales increased in Miami-Dade County in January. Existing condo sales jumped 12.9 percent and existing single-family home sales increased 9.8 percent, compared to January 2013.
